How Do You Read a Serial Number on a John Deere Lawn Tractor?

John Deere, one of the most reliable brands of lawn mower, manufactures tons of styles and models. Their tractors are for both residential and commercial use. John Deere’s products are all identified by a serial number, which Deere also refers to as PIN or product identification number. Similarly, these numbers are also called Lawn Mower ID No.

Depending on the type of lawn tractor, its features, and age of manufacture, the serial number can be found in several different locations on the tractor. Also, the length of the number sequence will vary as well, primarily based on the age of the lawn tractor. The numbers can be 13 or 17 digits long, and there are some steps to read a serial number on a John Deere lawn tractor.

Location 

You can locate the serial number or PIN on the mainframe of the tractor near the left rear wheel. It will appear on a sticker. There you will find a statement that reads “Manufactured by John Deere.” It is 13 or 17 digits long.

However, if you do not find it there, try lifting and looking under the seat at the top right-hand area of the frame. The 13 or 17 digit number may appear on a sticker titled “Manufactured by John Deere.”

There is another place that you can look up. Stand behind the machine and look on the left side of the mower deck frame. You can find that sticker here. Then again, if you are looking for the engine number, that can be found directly on the engine itself.

13 symbol VIN

The first two letters or numbers during a 13-symbol VIN are the factory code. For example, within the Deere VIN CD6068G123456, here CD is that the factory code.

After the factory code, there are three to six letters or numbers in a 13 symbol VIN. These four digits will be the model number of a John Deere Lawn tractor. So, according to the example, VIN CD6068G123456, 6068 is the model number.

Emissions level

Identify the letter in position seven during a 13-symbol VIN. This alphabet refers to the emission-level designation. So as of least to highest emissions, B means the mower is non-emissions certified. Where C means it is a Tier 1, G is Tier 2, and L is Tier 3. As an instance, within the Deere VIN CD6068G123456, G indicates a Tier 2 emissions level.

Identify the letter in position twelve, the last six digits in a 17-symbol VIN. These six digits are the serial number and are unique to your specific tractor. The serial number on the tractors are often used to track and identify individual John Deere tractors.

The last thing to identify is the letter and numbers in positions eight through twelve in a 17-symbol VIN. In order, these specify the safety code, civil year of manufacture, transmission code, and wheel or track designation. 

The civil year of manufacture is going to be denoted by an A for 2010, B for 2011, etc. The transmission code will be represented with an A, C, D, E, H, P, or R. The wheel or track designation will denote a 0 for the wheel or a 9 for the track.

Interpretations of the transmission code 

In here, A = AutoQuad with left-hand reverser, C means CommandQuad, D or IVT E means Scraper tractor configuration. Where H means PowrQuad or Manual Shift transmission, P represents PowerShift transmission and R represents PowrQuad with a left-hand reverser.

Note 

VINs with 17 letters and numbers do not have an emissions level designation and that is why you will find no information. Not to mention, you can find emission levels on 13 letters VINs tractor.

Identify the letter and numbers in positions through 12 in a 17-symbol VIN. In order, these determine the safety code, civil year of manufacture, transmission code, and wheel or track designation.

Manufacturers can use serial numbers to ascertain where a tool came from and when it had been manufactured, so serial numbers can help identify a drag somewhere within the manufacturing process.
